Choo Choo Goes the Charcoal Trend

Wednesday, December 03, 2014
Just on a random day, I decided to pick up a charcoal facial cleanser at Shoppers, and since then I've been obsessed with charcoal everything. So with that said, I thought it would be fun to do a post on some beauty charcoal products that I have been using.

So first, what are the benefits of charcoal on your skin? Activated charcoal is actually a very effective natural detox, it has the gastrointestinal ability to detox overdoses of drugs like opium, cocaine and even metals like mercury and lead (according to Because of this ability to remove toxins in the body, it's the perfect ingredient to reduce acne or other skin impurities.

Baléa Charcoal Facial Cleanser
Try this cleanser by Baléa. The charcoal facial cleanser is thick, foams a dark grey and even has tiny particles of charcoal to lightly exfoliate.

The pump is useful in the shower, but be aware that any excess product on the pump will turn into a gel. It's not really a nuisance though, the gel peels off easily if you have O.C.D like me.

It's effective but gentle in my opinion, and my skin feels very clean and refreshed after every daily wash. It's hard to explain, but my face just feels happy after every wash.

This is my all time favourite cleanser so far, and when paired with my Clarisonic, the 200ml bottle will last about 2 months. Best of all, it's Paraben free.

VO BATH CO Detox Activated Charcoal Soap

I have one of these in my shower right now, and I can't get enough. Everything from Vo Bath Co, is literately made in her little kitchen in Toronto.

The soap lathers a light grey, and there are tiny black specs, but not enough to feel like it's exfoliating or scatching. It's a gentle soap that has detoxifying properties, and for $6.00 that ain't bad.

It's an ultra moisturising soap that leaves my skin feeling happy, and best of all it's all organic, natural and Canadian made.

Bioré Deep Pore Charcoal Cleanser
Not down with all the good organic vibes? That's ok! I received this cleanser while at Spark Sessions, and it's certainly worth a try too. This product is lighter on the charcoal side compared to some of the other products mentioned.

The charcoal specs are not as noticeable, but the product itself is still just as effective in cleansing, and ideal if you're looking for something that has more of a gel consistency. Unlike the other charcoal cleanser, after the wash you do get a tingly freshness and tightness that the other cleanser doesn't provide.

The only downside is that this product does contain several paraben ingredients...Well, there's no actual study that proves parabens are bad, but because parabens can mimic the hormone estrogen, it's just a little sketchy as estrogen is known to play a role in the development of breast cancer. If it makes you feel better, even though it act's like estrogen, it's been shown to have much less estrogenic activity than the body’s naturally occurring estrogen.  Certainly give it a try though, Bioré has been in my regime for a while, so I'm looking forward to finishing this bottle too.

I hope you like this post, it's certainly one of my favourites so far.
